Dark Whimsy Favorites #6-10
Rick Retro’s Realm, Project #3: 40 Dark Whimsy Favorites in 80 Days, 1968-1979, Herbie, Oscar, Monty, Kermit and more Peter.
The next review project begins soon. I’m doing an overview of 40 of my Dark Whimsy favorites!
I’ve already announced the first five:
#1 (1944) Arsenic and Old Lace
#2 (1959) The Mouse That Roared
#3 (1963) The Pink Panther
#4 (1965) The Sound of Music
#5 (1965) The Great Race
The next five films take us from 1969 through the 1970s:
#6 (1968) The Love Bug
I’m pretty sure my parents took us to a drive-in to see this one. And that I saw it again later on the old Wonderful World of Disney TV show. I’m not expecting an A+ here, but might have graded it that highly when I saw it 50 years ago.
#7 (1973) The Sting
The first PG movie I saw in a theater, with my father and maternal grandfather. Can’t say I remembered much from that viewing, except a slightly graphic death and that it was a good movie. But I’ve seen it at least twice as an adult... It’s an all-time great film.
#8 (1975) Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Their best work of Dark Whimsy.
#9 (1979) The Muppet Movie
Out of the swamp, the Muppets finally make it to the big screen.
#10 (1979) Being There
More Peter Sellers in another iconic role. Originally a satire, looks more like prophecy now.
#11-15 will be revealed tomorrow!
