Retro Reviews Reference
As a reminder, the Opinion Block begins with the Grade Line and my overall grade for the work. Next the Entertainment Quality Line reveals my EQ (👍), my grade for the Entertainment Quality of the work divorced from my opinion about the viewpoint of the work. After the Dark Whimsy Line, the POPCAP Line reveals the popular opinion percentile (POP 🍿) and creative achievement percentile (CAP 🧢) of the work.
The fifth line of the Opinion Block is the Left-Right Line. Here, for additional comparison before the review begins, I give you percentile scores, ranging from 00 to 99, showing the percentage of works that differently aligned critics rate below this work.
The Left-Right Line might look like one of these examples:
L-R ☮️85 ◀️82 ▶️75 🛐54
L-R ☮️30 ◀️35 ▶️45 🛐71
L-R ☮️92 ◀️97 ▶️97 🛐98
The emojis used before the ratings stand for:
☮️ Far Left View: This percentile represents the opinions of far-left or “woke” critics, gleaned from their reviews or awards given by groups who share this viewpoint. This may include a diversity of leftist viewpoints, since different leftist groups and critics have a variety of agendas.
◀️ Mainstream View: This percentile represents the opinions of “mainstream” critics, gleaned from their reviews or awards given by groups who share this viewpoint. “Mainstream” critics usually claim to be unbiased, but generally have a left of center viewpoint, despite not relying heavily on obvious leftist terminology.
▶️ Conservative View: This percentile represents the opinions of conservative or “based” critics, gleaned from their reviews or awards given by groups who share this viewpoint. This group does not include those who expressly claim a religious basis for their viewpoint, so it tends to be right of center and libertarian in politics, but may be socially liberal at times.
🛐 Christian View: This percentile represents the opinions of religious conservative critics, gleaned from their reviews or awards given by groups who share this viewpoint. This group includes those who expressly claim a Judeo-Christian religious basis for their viewpoint.
It may take some time to gather enough data to report significant percentile scores, so if there is not enough comparison data for a particular work, the Left-Right Line will look like this:
L-R ☮️n/a ◀️n/a ▶️n/a 🛐n/a
I’m expecting it to take a few months at least before I’ve collected enough data to give relevant scores. It’s not my highest priority right now.
This Reference Rundown will be updated to include more details of component factors and how the percentiles are calculated once enough data has been collected to begin including the percentiles in reviews.
