Rick Retro’s Realm, Behind the Scenes #18: Domains and names can really be pains. Plus Substack update.
Last week rickretro.com was not available and today it was. So I bought it. And also created an X account (@RickRetroDotCom). That was easy.
I was looking into getting retroreview.com or retroreviews.com. Both were taken by brokers and I asked for price quotes but haven’t heard back. Since rickretro.com is shorter, it’s probably better anyway.
Substack... The jury is still out. It’s a little confusing to navigate 3 different interfaces—the app, the mobile website and the desktop website. When you are just a reader, the website looks pretty much the same on phone or desktop, so that’s good.
Beyond that... I’ll let you know more tomorrow afternoon. I need to experiment a bit.
My early thought about my Substack space is that I will probably use links and index pages to find things easily, because I’ve already learned it can take a long time to scroll back through an author’s work if he’s been posting regularly on Substack for more than a year.
I’ve subscribed to a few Substacks. One of two I paid for offered me five “paid for one month” subscriptions to give away ($8 value). It’s called Daily Movie Question and asks everything from expected questions (What’s your favorite sports movie?), to nuanced ones (What’s a movie you appreciate more as an adult than as a kid?), to offbeat ones (What movie character would you want to switch lives with?), to unexpected ones (What’s a movie that made you laugh when you weren’t supposed to?). I've found the questions and answers to be interesting and entertaining, and this will be a great source for me to gather ideas for movie review projects, or individual movies to review.
So if you would like one of the free trials, let me know! (I’ve heard that Substack free newsletter trials don’t automatically renew. I can’t personally confirm that from experience, but if true, that’s a really good thing!)
Thanks for your support.
Keep the comments coming!
