Update, December 26, 2024

Rick Retro’s Realm, Behind the Scenes #7: Tinkering with Reviews and early thoughts of Substack.

I’m still working to get the reviews looking just right, and to correctly organize the information at the top of the reviews to make it easy to find and understand all the info conveyed in such a short space.

To that end, starting tomorrow, what I’ve previously called the quality block will now be called the opinion block and moved up to directly follow the header block. This is so you can immediately see the grade I gave the movie, and once it’s more developed, the opinion of others as well.

Next will be the viewpoint block. It’s still being developed, but I think I will roll it out within a week.

Finally, the genre block will be last, leading into the review.

With all these changes, the first couple of Reference Rundowns are out of date, so once I’ve updated them, I’ll run the updated versions as new posts. Those will be followed by a few more Rundowns that provide explanations for more abbreviations, symbols and emojis used, culminating in the Rundown for the genre emojis once the Name That Genre contest is over.

In addition to the Reference Rundowns, I intend to write a series of short essays, Rick Retro’s Rationales, explaining my viewpoints and why and how I apply them to the works I review.

Giving more information about reviewed works will also mean my reviews up to now will become outdated. I plan to update them all, over time between new reviews, even if that means revisiting them with a new viewing to get the newer ratings right. I’m hoping to post them on a new searchable platform rather than re-posting them to this text group.

The platform I’m most likely to use based on my investigation so far, is Substack. It seems very pro-writer and anti-censorship. I’m not sure when I will start using it... There will clearly be a learning curve for me, but it doesn’t appear too difficult.

So those are my plans for the near future of Rick Retro’s Realm. I’ll keep you apprised of my progress.
