Now on Substack!
Rick Retro’s Realm, Behind the Scenes #19: The latest update on moving the Realm onto Substack.
I was quoted a price of $2,788 for retroreview.com. As I said yesterday, since rickretro.com is shorter, it’s probably better anyway. Since it cost me less than 1% of that price quote, it's definitely better!
And you can go there now!
For a one-time fee of $50, Substack allows you to use your own domain name. So instead of finding me at rickretro.substack.com, I'm at rickretro.com.
I’ve only just started on building the site. Feel free to check it out, but lets wait a while before inviting more friends... I want it to make a better impression than it would so far.
Instead, please help me out by letting me know anything you notice that you think could be improved.
I used an AI image generator for my first time to come up with my logo. What do you think of it? You get very limited use before you have to pay, so I was pleased that I liked one of the four images generated from my first prompt!
I’m still working through the one-time setup tasks. For example, today I customized the Welcome email. Feel free to subscribe and then criticize that email!
I’ve put up a couple of posts from way back when we started on December 1 last month. Until I start posting new reviews you won’t get emails from me. Even then you will be able to turn off emails or subscribe to just a weekly digest that summarizes and links to the posts for the whole week.
My preference with reading other Substack writers I’m subscribed to is to read on my mobile internet browser. In my case, I have found the Substack app to not perform quite as well for reading purposes... It doesn't always show photos and images properly, sometimes delivering just a black box where a picture should be.
But I still recommend the Substack app—the notifications in the app are valuable to me. I set them to be silent, but it’s the only way to know an author made a new post except email. Authors also drop Substack Notes at times—these are shorter than most posts and don’t get sent as emails. You can find a tab for old Notes on each publication’s home page, but the app is the only way to get notified that a new Note has dropped.
So when you get notifications from the app, instead of clicking them and viewing in the app, I recommend going to your browser and finding the content in a click or two. When you’re logged in, it’s pretty easy from either your home page or the list of your subscriptions in your profile.
If there’s anything interesting to report tomorrow morning after more infrastructure building tonight, I will let you know, otherwise I may skip the morning post and just update you in the afternoon.
Thanks for your support.
Keep the comments coming!
